Field Experience Information
What to Expect on a CBNERR Field Experience
-
During a typical CBNERR field experience, we spend a portion of our time in the laboratory, and a portion of our time in the York River. During the laboratory, we typically focus on lab techniques such as classification, microscopy, and oyster reef habitats. This activity requires closed toe shoes, as well as clothes that can get wet and/or muddy.
-
The second portion of the field experience is spent in the York River. You will get wet. This activity requires a second set of closed toe shoes that will get wet (unless we are using waders which is typically from April-May), and clothes that can get wet. We will be wading in the water up to our waist. Please dress accordingly, and pack a full change of clothes and a towel for afterwards.
-
We will cancel a trip if it looks like it's going to be rainy for the entire day, or if storms are coming through. We will go out into light or passing showers. Alternate lab and classroom activities are available instead of going outside.
-
A signed liability waiver is required to participate in any field experience activities on or off campus.
-
Students and teachers should bring a packed lunch. There are no food vendors or cafeteria on the VIMS campus.
-
CBNERR is only able to host 32 students at a time in the laboratory. Please email the CBNERR education coordinator if you have any questions about signing up for a field trip, or what will occur during the trip. All field experiences can be tailored for the students' grade level and interests.
